My name is Tiraj Johnson-Garay, also known as 'Golden One'. I'm a proud Afro Boricua, multidimensional artist, social worker, and activist. My goal is to transmute harm to harmony and paint into proclamations. The foundation of my art lies within myself and the trauma-informed care I've provided my communities for almost a decade. Empowering mental health themes are depicted in my pieces. My distinctive style is an intentional narration of the complexity of our human experiences. Rather than projecting stories and emotions as a monolith through my eyes, my brushwork and blend of different shapes create windows of authenticity that call in the viewer to witness the dynamics of their own lives through my work. Influences of geometric abstraction, Afrofuturism, and modern cubism act not only as an ode to my Taino & African Ancestors but as an illustration of simplicity at its finest. Art that is simple yet vocal. I don't necessarily want to imitate life. Instead, I want to cultivate a community where we can reflect and assist each other in diving deeper into our subconscious mind, safely unmask, and exist in all of our unapologetic Truths through creative expression.
